Welcome to The Miami University Graduate Program in Architecture. This brief program overview offers a glimpse into graduate student life in Architecture at Miami University. Graduate study in architecture at Miami University is based upon inquiry that assists the student in forming a set of critical architectural practices to guide their intellectual and professional development. A rigorous professional curriculum and renowned graduate thesis process, in both written and design formats, prepare graduates for entry into the architectural profession and its related disciplines from a position of strength and vitality. Across the curriculum students critically assess their world, position themselves within it, and engage the forces they see as shaping it as they offer ideas and give form to their design solutions. Numerous opportunities to engage in research, field study, and off-campus experiences expand and apply student knowledge beyond the studio and classroom. As part of the application process, students are considered for significant financial support. Competitively awarded, merit-based graduate assistantships provide tuition remission, a stipend, and support for summer coursework. Assigned to the student based on their capabilities and interests, assistantships support the teaching, research, and service mission of the Department and The School of Fine Arts. We hope you find this vignette of our program challenging and of interest and I look forward to personally assisting you in the pursuit of your graduate education in architecture at Miami University.

“The atmosphere at Miami is one in which learning through exploration is encouraged. Architecture here goes beyond the built form to the depths of the theory behind the form. Without theory, the concept is lost. Without the studio, the passion is lost. Combining theory within the studio enriches our ability to produce architecturally responsible design.”

“I came to know about Miami one summer during an internship at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. A group of graduate students from Miami spent time on-site for a project. This allowed me to get to know them and a little bit about the program. This connection led me to apply along with the intimate program size, the opportunities for international study, the financial aid package and the general atmosphere were ultimately the reasons I chose to attend. ”

“The time I spend working on the computer, drawing, running with ideas, sketching on a little pad or a big board, building models, are all intertwined with short breaks and walks, lunches, dinners, 10 minute naps, discussions about Baudrillard and Bachelard, laughs on “Family Guy”, and many other moments that make the studio a place where we discover many things about architecture, life, and ourselves. ”
