What is required?
A portfolio of creative work is required for all M. Arch.
I, M. Arch. II, and M. Arch. III program applicants. For applicants
to the M. Arch. I and M. Arch. II programs, it is expected
that the portfolio include examples of undergraduate and/or
professional architectural design projects and other indicators
of creative activity including, but not limited to, areas
such as the fine arts, humanities, and related design disciplines.
What should be in a portfolio?
For applicants to the M. Arch. III program, the documentation
of creative work may include examples from a wide range of
creative fields such as the fine arts, humanities and related
design disciplines including, but not limited to: photography,
sculpture, painting, ceramics, metalwork, cinema (film footage,
scripts), creative writing (published or unpublished writing,
poetry, reviews, critical or historical essays), music and
the performing arts (musical compositions, sound or video
tapes of performance activity, scenic design), graphic design
and product design.
Candidates from technical disciplines, sciences, liberal arts,
and other non-design related backgrounds are encouraged to
consult the Director of Graduate Studies about appropriate
support materials.
What is the portfolio format?
All work must be reproductions: quality, printed digital photographs or images. Works submitted as digital print-outs should be in the highest resolution possible, printed on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. You should number each image and append a
written explanation with pertinent identifying information (title, medium,
size and comments you may wish to make about the work). Images may be organized using Adobe Photoshop or similar software. Do not send CD-ROMS or Zip-Disks.
You should also include a sample of good expository or creative
writing.
The portfolio should be flat, neatly organized, and compact
for convenient storage.
Due to the large number of applicants, portfolio reviews will not be scheduled during informational interviews with the Department. We ask that you send portfolios to
the department or drop them off. However, we strongly recommend
that you also schedule an informational interview and departmental
tour in advance of the application deadline.
When is the portfolio deadline?
Please send your portfolio to the Director of Graduate
Studies in the Department of Architecture and Interior Design
by January 15 so that it can receive full consideration by
the
Graduate Admissions Committee.
- Your application
is incomplete until your portfolio arrives.
- Late portfolios will only be considered
on an as-needed basis.
- Portfolios of original works are
unacceptable.
- Portfolios submitted in non-conforming
formats may not be considered.
- Please include return postage and
a mailer if you wish your portfolio to be returned. Portfolios
where postage is not provided will be discarded after May
1.
- The Department will assume no responsibility
for loss of or damage to any portfolio materials submitted.
If you have questions about the portfolio requirement, please
contact Professor John Reynolds, Director of Graduate Studies,
or Coni Biggs, Program Associate in the Department
of Architecture and Interior Design.
