Ghana Studio and Summer Workshop (West Africa)
Since 1994, Professor Gail Della-Piana has taken students from Architecture and Interior Design and from other departments to Ghana for a service learning experience. Students have conducted their own research and have participated in several design/build projects including a house, a covered walkway leading into the rainforest and a village library. The Ghana program is associated with the Department of Architecture at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi and with the Department of Home Science at the University of Ghana in Accra. Departmental Field Trips
Every year several field trips have traditionally taken place. During the fall semester, various studios organize field trips within the United States. Popular destinations have included Chicago, New York, and Bear Run, Pennsylvania (site of Frank Lloyd Wright's "Fallingwater," a residential work for the Edgar Kauffmann family in the late 1930s). During spring break, there is usually an international field trip. Low cost and direct contact with students as well as international culture have characterized recent excursions to England, Spain, and Czechoslovakia.
