Students in the Department of Architecture and Interior Design may elect to pursue several US-based off-campus programs, including:

Washington-Alexandria Center

Over-The-Rhine Design Build Studio

Community Design Assistance Group

Internship Program

Washington-Alexandria Center
The Washington-Alexandria Center is a consortium of several schools of architecture and serves as a branch campus for each one. Up to fifteen seniors may enroll annually in one or two semesters of work at the center. The proximity to the nation's capital allows our students a breadth of experience which would be impossible elsewhere. The various government agencies and private institutions which are headquartered in Washington, most notably the National Building Museum and the Smithsonian Institution, offer projects, lecture series, and workshops that no single school of architecture could possibly undertake. Students also have opportunities to work as interns in architectural firms in the Washington, D.C. and northern Virginia area while taking the full complement of classes at the Center. Over-The-Rhine Design Build Studio
The Department of Architecture and Interior Design have recently established a unique educational experience for its students to work in Over-The-Rhine (OTR), an historic district in Cincinnati, Ohio. As an inner city district, Over-The-Rhine suffers from classic problems of poverty, conflicting forces of homelessness and gentrification, of housing abandonment and debilitation by absentee landlords. Students can elect to take the Over-The-Rhine design/build studio in their third or fourth year of the undergraduate program. The studio relates to the community as students and faculty work on the renovation of older structures and the design of new proposed structure for the district. Students and faculty work on site three to four times a week. During the fall semester 2006, the Department inaugurated the OTR Residency Program, allowing a selected group of students to not only work but also live in Over-the-Rhine. For more information visit the Miami University Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine website or email Tom Dutton.

Community Design Assistance Group
As part of the effort to enhance student education and strengthen community/University relations, the Department of Architecture maintains the Community Design Assistance Group (CDAG). This group is composed of faculty and students who offer design services to community and non-profit groups in southwestern Ohio and elsewhere. The program directly exposes students to the social, political, economic, and environmental factors influential in determining physical form. CDAG constitutes a vehicle for students to augment the theory of the University with practical experience.

Internship Program
Students may apply for internships in a group of architectural and interior design firms in and outside of Ohio. Normally, an internship lasts for one summer but may be repeated at the discretion of the employing firm. Architecture majors who engage in an architectural internship begin or continue a record of work through a special program established by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). The Intern-Architect Development Program (IDP) records work units in specific areas of practical training, all of which document a student's preparation for the licensing examination.
